Howard Receives R1 Designation
Howard has been conferred a Research One (R1) Carnegie Classification, indicating “very high research spending and doctorate production.” R1 is widely considered to be the highest research activity classification among colleges and universities in the United States. Howard University is the only historically Black college or university (HBCU) that has achieved the R1 designation.
